Weight Loss and Recovery from Addiction

One of the things you have to look at in recovery from addiction and alcoholism is the whole picture.

You have to consider your health from an holistic perspective. We did not get clean and sober just to die from a heart attack or something. The point is to live a healthy and fulfilling life. We do this by approaching our health from a broad perspective and stay open to ideas about how we can live better.

In my recovery, one of the biggest hurdles to good health was that I needed to quit smoking. This was a huge challenge for me but I managed to do it after several years of failed attempts.

The other big challenge that many people face in recovery is with their desire for fast weight loss. I know many people personally in recovery who have struggled with this, because a lot of times they simply did not care when they were still drinking and drugging, but now that they are sober they are interested in losing the weight.

Although I am not personally overweight, I tend to eat a lot of junk food and so I have also tried to change my diet. This has proven to be extremely difficult for me, I cannot imagine how tough it is for anyone to really lose weight. So I have experimented with a few ideas with my own diet so as to try and eat healthier and also to learn more about my dependency on junk food.

One thing I have done is to start juice fasting every few months. This sounds like a radical idea to most people because they have simply never tried it and they believe that is must not be healthy for you. I can assure you that it is very healthy and I do not need to read any books or consult with any gurus to recognize that my body is healing when I fast.

Fasting is natural. Animals do it. We fast naturally when we are ill and our body can repair itself. Eating food all day requires a tremendous amount of energy to digest it. If you eat solid food, it takes 40% of the solid food you eat just to get the calories necessary to digest all of your solid food for the day. 40 percent! That is so inefficient.

Consider when you go on a fast though….your digestive system shuts down completely, it turns itself off like a light switch, and this frees up a TON of energy for other things. Everyone thinks they will be tired during a fast but you will experience the opposite.

I usually go with fresh squeezed juices and I might supplement that a bit with V-8 Fusion (because it is cheap). You might also try some tea in the mix if you are interested in some green tea weight loss.
